Tye Blanton had recently been transferred back to Mission from Duke University Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Durham, hospital spokesman Ryan Chambers said.

The Sept. 3 surgery had been successful, but the child was still listed in critical condition with serious cardiac and neurological conditions.

Tye was born seven weeks premature May 31, less than two weeks before his father was shot to death during a traffic stop on Interstate 40.
