On March 7th, Macon County Sheriff's Deputies were joined by detention officers, detectives, patrol officers, tactical officers, K-9 units, I.C.E. Agents and officers from the North Carolina Probation and Parole Office in Operation Safe Streets.
The one day surge in law enforcement action netted 21 arrests, 8 of them for immigration charges. The suspects arrested on immigration charges have since been transported to Charlotte for deportation hearings.
Charges ranged from no operator license and DUI to 1st degree rape of a child and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Phase I netted 17 arrests on January 11th. There was no word about when Phase III might occur.
