NC 11th District Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower says that, effective immediately, his campaign is out of the 'sound-bite' business. The candidate has indicated he will do no more media advertising between now and Election Day on November 4th.
"Most commercial advertising is devoted to manipulating voters with small slices of truth flavored with fantasy sprinkles," said Mumpower. "It generates revenue, cons the voters, and clutters up the media with boring commercials and distracting ads. We have advertised with almost every media outlet in WNC over the past year and that's enough. People know my name and that I am running for Congress. From here on out we will concentrate on facts and positions and the let voters take things from there."
"I find it interesting that we are criticized for not making money a central theme in this campaign," said Mumpower. "I see that as an asset and on that basis and others we are definitely running the most unique campaign in America today. Although my opponent has received a million and a half dollars from fellow Democrats, we have refused any money from my party because they persist in sidestepping our core principles. I have also turned away all PAC or special interest money and what I call the 'Buy America Plan' because I don't want the special interest attachments that are purchased with those dollars."

NC Republican Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower gives the Wounded Eagle Award to Health Shuler to highlight Shuler's flagrant disregard for representative responsibility, misuse of taxpayer monies, and bad legislation. Mumpower wants people to know that America is in trouble and this week 11th District Representative Heath Shuler has violated the responsibilities of his office.The Wounded Eagle Award is given to elected officials who act in ways candidate Mumpower believes are harming the future of America. Previous honorees have included Nancy Pelosi for using borrowed dollars to fund an "ill advised" economic recovery package and President Bush, a member of his own party, for his failure to protect US borders and enforce immigration law.
Mumpower has chosen Shuler as the third recipient for an especially "harmful" week of public service, bringing attention to the following insults to those in NC's 11th District and the nation-
1. Deciding the 213-212 vote to recess Congress without taking desperately needed action on energy policy, illegal immigration, and other pressing matters.
2. Wasting citizen tax dollars to finance his campaign for a third time this year through a mass mailing defending his outrageous vote for the pork laden farm bill - only 10% of which is devoted to helping small to medium farmers.
3. Excusing his position against drilling for our country's best oil reserves.
4. Continuing to flaunt his "Blue Dog" credentials and PAYGO promises while consistently supporting earmarks and voting the liberal line 86.4% of the time during the current Congress.
"I have always been a big fan of Democrat William Proxmire who gave out the 'Golden Fleece" award to highlight government waste - I am borrowing from his model," said Mumpower. "Proxmire was an authentic conservative Democrat - not an imposter using a few conservative positions and a pleasant smile to conceal his wasteful liberal voting record. I send my opponent this award with the hope that voters get the message. Shuler is helping insure that his children and my grandchildren will not realize the 'American Dream' that has blessed so many before us. 11th District Representative Heath Shuler's accommodation of his party's position on two key issues has drawn fire from his Republican challenger, Carl Mumpower. Shuler has taken a public stance against opening up domestic drilling opportunities, and supported Wednesday's 213-212 House recess call that was successful by a one vote margin. Mumpower has raised concerns that the current state of crisis in fuel costs calls for stronger Congressional action than "a summer vacation".
"Representative Shuler's vote could have kept Congress in session and at least left the door open for movement on energy," said Mumpower. "Instead, everything but the price of gas is on hold as the Democrat controlled Congress continues to side-step Republican efforts to move us toward energy solutions. In both cases, my opponent fell into line behind Nancy Pelosi and the environmental lobby - partners in kidnapping our country's energy policy."
"My party had the reins for years and sat still while the clock ticked toward our current energy crisis," said Mumpower. The President of the United States has the Constitutional power to reconvene either or both houses of Congress under 'extraordinary occasions'. Democrats Rush to the Exit
PRESS RELEASE
A slim majority of House members decided that a five week recess was in order following a 213-212 vote held earlier today. NC 11th District Representative Heath Shuler was among those who voted for the recess. Seventeen Democrats sided with the Republican minority in calling for continuing the session until action was completed on energy and other pressing matters.
Shuler's opponent, Republican Carl Mumpower, challenges the timing and purpose of the recess. "This kind of action illustrates why this Congress has earned a 14 percent approval rating with the American people," says Mumpower. "Their pattern of gridlock with real problems like our energy costs and out of control Federal spending continues to chop away at the 'American Dream'. Just one vote, from Shuler, would have kept Congress in session and forced them to keep working like most of the rest of us are."
"My opponent describes himself as a "Blue Dog" Democrat - a title referencing independent conservative values," notes Mumpower. "Yet the Washington Post says that Shuler has voted with his Democrat colleagues 86.4 percent of the time. This time his vote was crucial and invested in the wrong direction. Ouch!!!
I wonder how many people will complain about the President's absence from Washington...yet will forget that the Dems have voted to leave town for the month of August.
As long as I can remember, Congress has adjourned for the month of August, and the President has also left town for that same month. At least since Carter's time, this has been going on.
I like to refer to it as the French Vacation, because virtually the whole upper classes of the French decamp from the cities to the countryside or beaches for the whole month, or a very large portion of it.

Here at Scorecard, we’ve interviewed many prospective candidates for Congress — some who have become politically savvy after years of elective experience, some who come out of nowhere to become credible candidates, and some who just simply have no chance of winning.
And while we’ve never met Asheville city councilman Carl Mumpower, who’s running against Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), we’re guessing that he is in a league all of his own.
A week after suspending his campaign because of his party’s insufficient commitment to conservatism, Mumpower said his own county party is disassociating themselves from him — a rare occurrence.

Aside from the fact that Josh Kraushaar doesn't even know what county Mumpower is from (here's a hint...Asheville is in Buncombe County), it does seem that everyone on the national scene, and quite a few locally have given up on Mumpower. I just hope to God that he didn't make the colossal error of meeting with Ron Paul in Boone Friday night, as my operatives in the Ron Paul r3VOLution tell me he wanted to do.
I would like to see Mumpower get out and campaign, and see some advance notice of where is going to be and when.
Nearly all the Republican candidates seem to have this problem, Pat McCrory has been in the area several times without advance warning. Charles Taylor was the same way. He'd show up somewhere, then you'd read about it in the paper a few days later.
For example, Kay Hagan was in the area this weekend, and I was notified of her itinerary ahead of time. She was in Brevard and Sylva yesterday, and will be in Andrews and Bryon City today. [Kay Hagan Schedule] It was too bad that I couln't attend either of those events and get some video to post. [Elizabeth Dole Schedule]
In the NC Governor's race, compare the two calenders of Pat McCrory and Bev Perdue.
The Shuler people certainly get the word out when he is going to be in the area before he goes back to his home in Tennessee, where he is the second representative of the Second Congressional District. His Campaign Website is down at the moment, with the notice that a new website will be coming soon.
This is something I have been wanting Republicans to get involved in, the interactive nature of the Internet beyond mailing lists. The Mumpower Campaign is very good about using that tool. There isn't even a calender on the website, though.
I look forward to covering the NC-11 Campaign, but it is beginning to look like if I want to know ahead of time where a candidate is going to be...I'll be recording a lot more Democratic Events than I will be Republican Events.
Republicans are going to have to get away from this clique thinking, where only the inner circle and trusted supporters know where you are going to be and when. I would not have been able to record a lot of the events that I attended if I had not been "on the inside" to a certain point, and received notices from the various campaigns, or those carrying water for a certain campaign.
Republicans need to see the possibilities instead of the limitations.
I'll let you know if this post gets me thrown overboard.

On Monday Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower told the 11th District Republican Committee that his campaign was officially on hold until at least half of the counties in Western North Carolina got behind a "Principles First" proposal. Moving beyond their initial shock, Committee members went back to their home counties with a unanimous recommendation for approval. That effort was rewarded Thursday evening when the eighth of fifteen counties, Macon, held their own unanimous vote to join Mumpower in making it clear that the Republican Party is back and on track.
Mumpower's campaign suspension centered on a call for an authentic 11th District rededication to core Republican principles and the establishment of their own procedure for holding local, state, and national leaders accountable to those principles. This unusual strategy was rewarded with timely action by Buncombe, Swain, Henderson, Clay, Rutherford, Transylvania, McDowell, and Macon counties. "I did not expect things to move this quickly, but I should have known better," said Mumpower. "The majority of Republicans I've talked to, including Macon Chair Gary Dills, are ahead of me in recognizing the importance of a return to principles above all other political considerations."
"People have lost faith in the Republican Party because we have allowed power, political correctness, and other pressures to trump our core values," said Mumpower. The recent Mumpower Campaign Suspension has been totally misinterpreted by all except the party faithful. To whit, in a recent Press Release, Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower has announced that Transylvania County has signed on to party principles, and to hold elected Republicans accountable.
This brings the total counties supporting Mumpower's "Principles First Campaign."
They are: Buncombe, Henderson, Swain, Clay, Rutherford and Transylvania Counties.
I have enjoyed reading people's misunderstanding of what the purpose of this is, especially at the local nutroots group blog Scrutiny Hooligans and the national nutroots hangout Daily KKKos. They have no idea what is headed their way come November, and I hope it stays that way.

For many the Hendersonville Republican Men's Club is the epicenter of Republican politics in the 11th District. True to tradition, the club has invited Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower for a Wednesday meeting that has the makings of a show down between a strong-minded group of party leaders and a "maverick" politician with a mind of his own.
"Yes, I am in a struggle of wills with my party's power structure," said Mumpower. "My readiness to violate Reagan's 11th commandment about not saying anything bad about fellow Republicans has upset former supporters." "I have been clear that if our party will not hold itself and our elected officials accountable to our guiding principles, then I will. It is nonsense to waste time throwing criticism at the Democrat's lawn while ignoring the weeds in our own. We mock Reagan and our founding fathers by trying to fight today's challenges with our own version of political correctness. I have faith that good hearts will win in the end, and 11th District Republicans will bond around our core values."
Nationally, many political observers indicate the Republican Party is in trouble. The May election saw the party lose key seats in historically conservative districts - pointing to 2008 as a potentially difficult year for Republicans.

Mumpower: Guantanamo Detainees a Dangerous Threat
The Supreme Court has handed the Bush Administration a third rebuke on the President's efforts to hold terror detainees outside the protections of U.S. law. The ruling opens the door for suspected terrorists to seek release through federal courts.
11th District Republican Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower questioned the provision of Constitutional protections for non-citizens, but applauded the court's call for action. "Holding people, even bad people, for indefinite periods of time without charges and trials is against everything that is America," said Mumpower. "I'll leave the Constitutional arguments to the scholars, but America is not about putting people in detention for 5 years without judicial consideration of guilt or innocence."
"Had the Bush Administration implemented a proper and timely judicial process, it is doubtful we would be in this place," said Mumpower. "The Nuremburg trials of 1945 offer a model that has firm application for today's reality." "That proceeding supported the rule of law with fair and swift justice that has withstood the eyes of time."
"We all understand that many of these detainees are dangerous men and appreciate the President's efforts to protect us," noted Mumpower. "There are also dangers in indifference to the core principles that make us who we are as a country."
"Guantanamo's reality is an embarrassment to America," said Mumpower. "Anyone brought there should be tried on a timely basis and sentenced or let go based on the evidence in hand." "We can kill them if they return, but we should not kill America's belief in the fair application of justice. We applied these principles to the leaders of Germany responsible for the deaths of over 50 million people. Mumpower: Shuler Votes More Liberal Than Murtha and Kucinich

According to many national issue surveys, the state of the economy is the number one concern for most Americans. The Club for Growth, a national policy body with a primary focus on economic growth issues, tracks the pro-economic growth votes of leaders in the House and Senate. Per their calculations, 11th district Congressman Heath Shuler votes against economic growth 98% of the time - a record more anti-growth than that of his liberal colleagues in Congress - John Murtha, Charles Rangel and Dennis Kucinich.
The organization uses the following pro-economic policy goals to assess leadership standing-
· Making the Bush tax cuts permanent
· Death tax repeal
· Cutting and limiting government spending
· Social Security reform /personal accounts
· Expanding free trade
· Legal reform to end abusive lawsuits
· Replacing the current tax code
· School choice
· Regulatory reform and deregulation
John Murtha scored 5%, Rangel 12%, and Kucinich 6% while Shuler scored 2% on the pro economic growth screen. In contrast, North Carolina Republicans Sue Myrick, Patrick McHenry, and Virginia Foxx scored 89-90% on the same criteria.
Shuler's Republican opponent in the 11th District race, Carl Mumpower, points to the score as an objective measurement of the Congressman's true political leanings. "As politicians we are defined by our voting record, not by what we call ourselves," said Mumpower. "Mr. Shuler may have a few conservative positions, but that does not make him a conservative anymore than a bank robber taking off Sunday can be called a preacher." "Most people in WNC are concerned about the direction of our economy, and these folks at the Club for Growth are too. That's why they are shining light on actual voting records over common perceptions. Mr. Shuler is not a conservative and with those percentages his independence and concern for the economy also merit challenge."

John Murtha scored 5%, Rangel 12%, and Kucinich 6% while Shuler scored 2% on the pro economic growth screen. In contrast, North Carolina Republicans Sue Myrick, Patrick McHenry, and Virginia Foxx scored 89-90% on the same criteria.
Shuler's Republican opponent in the 11th District race, Carl Mumpower, points to the score as an objective measurement of the Congressman's true political leanings. "As politicians we are defined by our voting record, not by what we call ourselves," said Mumpower. "Mr. Shuler may have a few conservative positions, but that does not make him a conservative anymore than a bank robber taking off Sunday can be called a preacher." "Most people in WNC are concerned about the direction of our economy, and these folks at the Club for Growth are too. That's why they are shining light on actual voting records over common perceptions. Mr. Shuler is not a conservative and with those percentages his independence and concern for the economy also merit challenge."
